Colombo Port Records Historic High of 8.29mn TEUs in 2025
The Port of Colombo reached a major milestone in 2025, recording its highest-ever container throughput of 8.29 million TEUs, a 6.4% increase from 2024, further cementing its status as South Asia’s leading transshipment hub.

The growth was supported by the commencement of operations at the Colombo West International Terminal, which added critical deep-water capacity to handle ultra-large container vessels. Performance across both state-owned and private terminals remained strong, with domestic container volumes rising nearly 14% and transshipment volumes increasing by over 5% during the year.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said the record performance reflects operational resilience and continued confidence from global shipping lines, despite challenging global trade conditions. Looking ahead, the SLPA expects the Port of Colombo to exceed 10 million TEUs in 2026, positioning it as a key driver of Sri Lanka’s logistics and trade-led growth.
