A container ship operated by CMA CGM was struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, injuring several crew members as tensions linked to the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict continue to disrupt global shipping routes.
The vessel, San Antonio, was attacked Tuesday near the coast of Oman. According to the company and maritime security sources, eight crew members were injured and evacuated for medical treatment. The ship reportedly sustained damage after being hit by an Iranian projectile during a nighttime transit.
The incident marks the 32nd reported attack on commercial shipping since the conflict began, according to the International Maritime Organization. Industry analysts warn the instability is severely affecting maritime trade flows and energy shipments through one of the world’s most critical shipping chokepoints.
Meanwhile, another CMA CGM-operated vessel, Saigon, successfully exited the Gulf and was later tracked sailing south of Muscat en route to Colombo. The company confirmed the vessel’s departure but declined further comment.
The developments come as the United States temporarily paused its naval escort initiative, known informally as “Project Freedom,” amid ongoing diplomatic talks with Iran aimed at easing regional tensions.
Shipping groups including BIMCO warned that commercial transits through the Strait without coordination with Iranian authorities remain highly risky.
