US Announces New Tariffs Effective October 1: Pharmaceuticals, Trucks, Furniture Among Targets
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new wave of tariffs set to take effect on 1 October 2025, targeting pharmaceuticals, trucks, and household products in an effort to boost domestic manufacturing.

The most sweeping measure is a 100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical products, unless the manufacturer is actively building a production facility in the United States. Trump framed the move as an incentive to shift pharmaceutical production back to US soil.

Additional tariffs include:

- 25% levy on heavy trucks manufactured outside the US,
- 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related products, and
- 30% tariff on upholstered furniture.

Trump defended the measures as necessary to counter what he called unfair foreign competition and market flooding.

“The reason for this is the large-scale flooding of these products into the United States by other countries. It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect our manufacturing process—for national security and other reasons,” he wrote on his Truth Social account Friday.

On the heavy truck industry, Trump stressed that the tariffs aim to safeguard US makers such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, and Mack Trucks.

“We need our truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for national security purposes,” he said.

Regarding pharmaceuticals, Trump clarified that companies already “breaking ground” or with facilities “under construction” in the US would be exempt from the new 100% tariff.
