Acquiring control of Wilson Sons could enhance MSC's dominance in the Brazilian market
MSC’s acquisition of Brazilian operator Wilson Sons has garnered attention from forwarders in the region, with some viewing potential opportunities amidst the changes.
Ocean Wilson Holdings, based in London, announced yesterday that it has agreed to sell its 56.47% stake in Wilson Sons to MSC's port subsidiary, Shipping Agency Services. (For detailed figures, please refer to Loadstar Premium.)
In reaction to the news, a regional forwarder told The Loadstar, “This will impact forwarders. On the positive side, it could lead to enhanced efficiencies in port and logistics services, benefiting the region by creating a more integrated environment that reduces congestion.”
However, the forwarder cautioned that the deal would further solidify MSC's dominance, potentially diminishing customers' bargaining power with carriers, which could lead to increased rates.
While Wilson Sons primarily operates tugboats, it also manages container terminals in Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul, operates two shipyards, provides offshore support vessels, and runs a logistics center.
The forwarder acknowledged potential benefits from the acquisition, noting, “This could present opportunities for partnerships with MSC, leveraging its global network.”
Regarding the deal’s impact on Brazil's supply chains, the forwarder added, “It could reshape the competitive landscape, forcing companies to seek alternative port and transportation options away from established shippers. Additionally, it may result in changes to pricing structures and potential fee increases for businesses.”
