Canada is currently experiencing strikes at ports on both its east and west coasts
Canada is currently facing the imminent possibility of strikes on both its east and west coasts.
In British Columbia, employers at the ports have been alerted to a 72-hour strike notice issued by the union representing approximately 700 foremen amid ongoing labor negotiations. The B.C. Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) announced that if the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 514 proceeds with the strike, it will commence at 8 a.m. on Monday.
Frank Morena, president of ILWU Local 514, stated that the union has communicated to the employers association its intention to implement an overtime ban and refuse to adopt technological changes starting Monday unless a new collective agreement is reached by that time. "We are prepared to resume negotiations immediately," he emphasized.
This week, the two parties have engaged in discussions with the assistance of a federal mediator over the past three days in an effort to avert a work stoppage.
Simultaneously, unionized workers have initiated an indefinite strike at two terminals in the Port of Montreal, which began on Thursday due to stalled negotiations on a new labor contract. This strike impacts two terminals operated by Termont, which account for about 40% of the port’s container traffic, despite representing only 15% of its overall volume.
