Container handling operations at a Singapore yard have been indefinitely suspended after containers fell onto a forklift

PSA Singapore has suspended all empty container handling operations at its Pasir Panjang Terminal 3 after an accident on 25 November, in which stacked containers toppled onto a forklift around 6:40 am local time.

The incident left the 37-year-old forklift driver injured, with superficial head and body injuries, and he was transported to the National University Hospital in a stable condition. Following the accident, Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower ordered a pause on empty container handling and mandated a safety time-out to review workplace safety and operational processes.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of properly stacking containers according to accepted patterns and height limits to prevent such incidents. The Singapore Civil Defence Force responded to the scene at 6:55 am with an ambulance. Closed-circuit footage circulating on social media showed the forklift lifting a container before five stacked boxes fell, with one landing on the forklift cabin, causing the driver to fall to the ground.

Forklifts typically handle empty containers, while cranes are used for loaded ones.
