Cosco Shipping has enhanced its new container ship orders by equipping them with methanol-powered engines
Cosco Shipping Holdings has announced plans to upgrade the power systems of four newly constructed containerships from conventional fuel to methanol dual-fuel engines in a bid to reduce emissions. In collaboration with Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), the company will retrofit four 16,180 TEU vessels currently under construction, extending their delivery timelines between November 2025 and June 2026.
This upgrade aligns with Cosco Shipping Holdings’ long-term strategy to meet global green and low-carbon shipping regulations. The decision was made after evaluating the efficiency of retrofitting under-construction vessels and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
The retrofit project is expected to help these vessels remain compliant with evolving emission reduction policies while maintaining high environmental protection standards. It will also assist in mitigating compliance risks and reducing operational costs for the company.
In the first quarter of 2024, Cosco Shipping Holdings handled 6 million TEU in container volumes, marking a 10.53% year-on-year increase. The company currently operates 436 services globally.
