CWIT Expands Crane Fleet in Preparation for 2025 Operations
Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has taken a significant step toward establishing itself as one of Asia’s premier port facilities with the arrival of its first two semi-automated Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQCs) and an additional three fully automated Cantilever Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes (CRMGs). This shipment marks the second in a series of equipment deliveries, as CWIT prepares for its Phase 1 operations, slated to begin in February 2025.
This latest delivery follows the arrival of five CRMGs on September 3rd. By the time the terminal begins operations next year, CWIT will have a total of nine advanced cranes ready for use. These high-tech automated cranes are designed to boost operational efficiency and safety, minimizing human intervention while maximizing precision in cargo handling.
CWIT’s phased development plan envisions the terminal being equipped with 30 fully automated CRMGs and 14 semi-automated RMQCs upon full completion. This infrastructure will be key to expanding Sri Lanka’s port sector, significantly enhancing the container handling capacity at the Port of Colombo (POC) and positioning it to meet growing global trade demands.
The substantial investments in CWIT’s state-of-the-art technology and capacity upgrades will strengthen POC’s standing in terms of throughput and international connectivity. Once fully operational, CWIT will be instrumental in driving economic growth, providing critical capacity for mega-vessels, and fostering increased regional trade. With its scalable and efficient design, the terminal is well-equipped to support POC’s long-term vision of becoming a key gateway hub in the Indian Ocean.
Poised to become one of the most technologically advanced and strategically vital container terminals in the region, CWIT is leveraging cutting-edge automation to enhance its operational capabilities. As a key player in the global maritime industry, CWIT is set to play a crucial role in Colombo’s ascent as a top-tier maritime hub, contributing to economic progress and facilitating international trade across Asia and beyond. The terminal’s vision is encapsulated in its tagline: Connect. Collaborate. Contribute.
