Evergreen finalizes orders for 11 megamax vessels

Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen has officially confirmed long-anticipated orders for ultra-large containerships, investing between $2.91 billion and $3.25 billion for 11 new 24,000 TEU vessels across two shipyards.

The orders are split between Hanwha Ocean and CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI). Hanwha Ocean has secured six of the vessels, each valued between $265 million and $295 million, totaling around $1.77 billion. The five ships ordered from GSI are priced similarly, with the total contract value ranging between $1.325 billion and $1.475 billion.

With a fleet of over 220 boxships, Evergreen also has 60 newbuilds joining in the coming years. These latest ships will add 264,000 TEU to the company’s carrying capacity. While the delivery schedule has not been revealed, industry sources anticipate the first vessels could be delivered by 2028.

As the world’s seventh-largest carrier, Evergreen currently operates more than 20 conventional megamax vessels. For its new ships, the company has selected LNG dual-fuel propulsion, diverging from its 2023 order for 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.
