Hambantota International Port enhances bunkering services with new HSFO facilities

Hambantota International Port Expands Bunkering Services with HSFO Integration
Hambantota International Port (HIP) reached a significant milestone in January 2025 by successfully integrating High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) into its bunkering portfolio. This expansion enables HIP to offer a comprehensive range of marine fuels, including Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO/MDO), solidifying Sri Lanka’s position in the global maritime landscape. The addition of HSFO allows the port to serve a wider range of vessels operating along one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
“We are pleased to announce the full operational launch of our HSFO bunkering facility, a crucial step toward realizing our vision of becoming a leading global maritime hub,” said Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). “With an expanding service portfolio and a growing reputation for operational excellence, HIP is positioning itself as a key player in maritime trade and fuel supply. This development not only enhances our offerings but also reinforces Sri Lanka’s status as a critical maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region.”
State-of-the-Art HSFO Bunkering Facility
The newly commissioned HSFO facility boasts a 6,000 cubic meter storage capacity, divided between two dedicated tanks within the port’s oil tank farm. It features a high-capacity pumping system capable of transferring 400 metric tons per hour, ensuring efficient fuel delivery via a streamlined pipeline connected directly to HIP’s oil jetties. Advanced monitoring and remote-control systems further enhance safety and precision.
This infrastructure upgrade is particularly beneficial for vessels equipped with scrubbers, enabling them to use HSFO as a cost-effective fuel while complying with IMO 2020 sulphur cap regulations. The port’s capability to accommodate a broader spectrum of fuel requirements underscores its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the global shipping industry.
HIP celebrated the achievement with the successful discharge of 5,000 metric tons of HSFO and 20,000 metric tons of VLSFO from the vessel Grand Ace 10 between January 30 and February 1. This milestone marks the operational debut of HIP’s HSFO bunkering infrastructure, paving the way for greater fuel diversity in the region.
Strategic Positioning and Global Partnerships
Located along a key maritime corridor connecting Europe and Asia, HIP provides a critical refueling stop for vessels traversing the Indian Ocean. The integration of HSFO strengthens the port’s ability to serve diverse vessel types, from large tankers to smaller cargo ships requiring multiple fuel grades.
HIP’s collaboration with Sinopec, a global leader in energy, ensures the delivery of high-quality, reliable marine fuels. Additionally, the port’s operational excellence is certified by Lloyd’s Register (LR), a globally recognized authority in maritime classification. HIP’s Fitness for Service (FSS) certification, awarded in 2022, further validates its infrastructure, safety, and compliance standards.
A Commitment to Growth and Innovation
As the maritime industry evolves, Hambantota International Port remains dedicated to innovation, infrastructure development, and service excellence. This latest expansion underscores HIP’s commitment to supporting global shipping demands, enhancing its competitive edge, and contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic growth.
