Lufthansa Cargo will provide Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for Maersk's airfreight customers
Maersk has teamed up with Lufthansa Cargo to advance the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of their commitment to reducing emissions in airfreight. Due to the limited global supply of SAF, particularly at airports where Maersk operates, this partnership ensures that Maersk can still contribute to decarbonizing its air freight operations. Lufthansa Cargo will use SAF on Maersk's behalf and pass on the environmental benefits to Maersk's airfreight customers who opt for the ECO Delivery Air product.
The agreement aims to reduce at least 1,200 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions by the end of 2024, with SAF sourced from biogenic residues such as used cooking oil, processed through the HEFA method. This collaboration supports Maersk’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions across all transportation modes by 2040.
