MSC ship loses 46 containers off the coast of South Africa
The container ship MSC Antonia lost 46 containers overboard due to severe weather off the coast of Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape. The vessel, flying the Liberian flag, was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to New York when it encountered rough seas, resulting in the loss and damage of 305 additional containers.
The incident occurred last week, approximately 29 nautical miles northeast of Port St. Johns. Despite the significant loss and damage to the cargo, no injuries were reported, and the ship continued its voyage safely.
The MSC Antonia is currently docked in Cape Town for inspection, where the damaged cargo will be assessed and offloaded as necessary.
The MSC Antonia, a 7,000 TEU vessel measuring 304.15 meters in length and 40.05 meters in width, with a draft of 14.3 meters, was built in 2009.
This marks the third recent incident along the South African coast. Last month, the CMA CGM Belem lost 99 containers near the Port of Richards Bay and sought refuge in Maputo Bay. In July, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, while sailing from Asia to Europe, lost 44 containers, with 30 more reported damaged.
