New Training Center Opens in Hamburg to Advance Digital Skills for Port Operations

An HHLA employee tests the new training control center at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg, part of the PortSkill 4.0 initiative. This cutting-edge digital training center is designed to equip port workers with advanced skills needed for the digital and automated future of port operations.

Over the last two years, the PortSkill 4.0 project analyzed German seaport job roles to identify the changing demands brought by digitalization and automation, uncovering new tasks and roles requiring specialized skills. Through its state-of-the-art technology, networking capabilities, and skill-focused curriculum, the CTA training center prepares workers for these future needs, creating a platform for port specialists to thrive.

Innovative features, like virtual learning environments and immersive virtual reality, allow employees to engage in realistic simulations, enhancing skill development for various operational roles. Connected to other ma-co locations, this facility enables participants to interact within shared virtual spaces from different locations, enriching collaborative learning.

The project not only addresses a growing need for skilled workers but also supports the German port sector’s competitive advantage by fostering modern workforce development. German Senator for Economy and Innovation Dr. Melanie Leonhard highlights this effort as key to helping companies and workers face future challenges, while Torben Seebold, HHLA’s Chief Human Resources Officer, emphasizes the importance of targeted training in maintaining the port sector's strength.

André Kretschmar of ver.di underscores the necessity of specific future-oriented skills for secure, well-compensated employment in the face of technological change, positioning PortSkill 4.0 as essential for the sustainable evolution of port jobs.
