OOCL has committed to acquiring new vessels from Seaspan
Hong Kong’s Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has confirmed that it will charter the newly ordered series of 13,600 TEU vessels from Seaspan, a leading provider of containership tonnage.
In a filing to the stock exchange, the COSCO-controlled liner operator announced plans to lease each of the new vessels for 15 years, with a total payment amounting to approximately RMB 11.2 billion ($1.57 billion).
Seaspan, led by Bing Chen, has contracted Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to construct six of these vessels, which are expected to be delivered by 2028, with the first two scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2026.
These new vessels, measuring 336 meters in length, will be equipped with scrubbers and energy-saving technologies and are designed to be compatible with future fuels. Notably, this order from the world’s largest boxship lessor was finalized in renminbi rather than US dollars.
