Port of Colombo witnesses a surge in container volumes

In 2024, Sri Lanka's Port of Colombo has demonstrated significant growth in container handling, underscoring a marked improvement in its operational efficiency.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) reported a notable 16% year-on-year increase, with the port processing 1,541,034 TEUs so far this year. South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), one of the key operators at the port, also recorded a 10.4% rise, handling 1,281,642 TEUs. Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) saw a more modest 5% growth, with a total of 2,200,956 TEUs.

Collectively, the Port of Colombo has achieved a cumulative growth rate of 9.6%, reaching 5,023,632 TEUs in 2024, compared to 4,584,843 TEUs during the same period in 2023. If this momentum continues, 2024 is set to surpass previous records, solidifying Colombo’s position as a pivotal hub in the region, as stated by the SLPA.
