Port of Riga companies adopt green energy to drive sustainable growth

WT Terminal, an active operator within the Port of Riga, recently unveiled a solar panel installation aimed at partially fulfilling its energy needs with renewable power. Located atop the terminal’s warehouse, the solar array features 480 panels with a total capacity of 220.8 kW. Launched in 2023 with support from ALTUM and financing from Citadele Bank, the initiative is set to lower energy costs and shield the company from fluctuating electricity prices.

With energy-intensive operations, particularly in timber processing, WT Terminal’s move toward self-generated renewable power aligns with its focus on sustainability and cost-efficiency. As part of its green development strategy, the terminal will introduce an electric hydraulic crane next year, supported by a new transformer substation and shore power facilities. This upgrade is expected to enhance operational efficiency and cut emissions, underscoring the company’s environmental commitments.

Across the Port of Riga, green energy adoption is becoming a competitive advantage, with companies like Kronospan Riga and Baltic Container Terminal already harnessing solar power. Rīgas Universālais Termināls and TFS Trans logistics are also investing in solar and geothermal energy initiatives.

WT Terminal, a leading timber handler and one of the port’s top cargo operators, has achieved consistent growth, with a record 0.76 million tonnes of freight in 2023. Its strategic investments in green technology and infrastructure underscore its leadership in sustainable port operations.
