President Holds Meeting with the National Chamber of Commerce
President Advocates for Accelerated Digital Transformation and New Initiative to Reduce Electricity Costs in Meeting with National Chamber of Commerce
On Tuesday, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened with a delegation from the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) to discuss strategies for fostering economic growth.
During the meeting, the President outlined an ambitious plan for the country’s digital transformation, aiming for full implementation within the next three years. He emphasized that digitization could enhance Sri Lanka’s global competitiveness and confirmed that the government has already initiated several related projects.
According to the President’s Media Division, NCCSL members expressed their commitment to supporting economic development efforts pro bono, underscoring their dedication to national progress.
The discussions encompassed challenges and future goals across various sectors, including insurance, banking, construction, tourism, plantation industries, and small to medium-sized enterprises.
President Dissanayake highlighted the government's proactive approach to economic reconstruction, which includes tax concessions aimed at benefiting the public. He underscored the importance of energy autonomy in shaping policies within the electricity and energy sectors, pointing out that the forthcoming Electricity Act will prioritize this foundational goal.
The President also announced ongoing reforms to improve efficiency and management within the Electricity Board, with a focus on enhancing public service delivery. He expressed a commitment to significantly lowering electricity bills in the coming years.
In addition, President Dissanayake stressed the necessity of expanding the export sector and tapping into new international markets, emphasizing the government's strategy of appointing skilled professionals to diplomatic positions to facilitate this initiative.
Key attendees at the meeting included NCCSL President and GSH City Hotel Managing Director/CEO Deepal Nelson, Secretary and Region Renewables Managing Director/CEO Dr. Lakmal Fernando, Ceylinco General Insurance Managing Director Patrick Alwis, and Pan Asia Bank Director/CEO Nalin Edirisinghe, among others.
