SLFFA calls for quick action as Colombo Port congestion worsens

SLFFA Urges Immediate Action to Address Colombo Port Congestion
The Sri Lanka Logistics & Freight Forwarders Association (SLFFA) has raised concerns over the persistent congestion at Colombo Port, warning that the ongoing crisis is severely impacting the nation’s logistics sector and import/export trade. This prolonged issue, now spanning several weeks, is tarnishing Sri Lanka’s reputation not only within the region but across the global supply chain.

Given the country’s current economic challenges, SLFFA emphasized the urgent need for a unified response from all stakeholders, including government authorities, industry representatives, and service providers. The association underscored the importance of process improvements and digitalization, highlighting its ongoing discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Ministry of Highways, Ports & Aviation. SLFFA has submitted comprehensive proposals both independently and in collaboration with other trade bodies to address the crisis effectively.

“As we navigate this critical situation, it is evident that our operational processes require significant enhancement. Embracing digitalization, adopting a coordinated ‘single window’ system, and leveraging technology are essential steps to improve efficiency,” SLFFA stated.

The association called for a transformation of the logistics industry into a more streamlined and responsive framework. It stressed that by implementing digital solutions and refining operational processes, delays could be minimized, transparency improved, and the overall movement of goods expedited.

“These reforms are not only vital to resolving the current congestion but also crucial in preparing our ports and logistics systems for future challenges,” SLFFA noted.

Additionally, the association expressed deep concern over allegations directed at Expolanka Freight, one of its member organizations, which it believes unjustly discredits a company that has elevated Sri Lanka’s presence on the global stage. SLFFA urged authorities to conduct an impartial and swift investigation to ensure public access to accurate and factual information.

SLFFA reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside all stakeholders to find practical and immediate solutions to the crisis. It stressed that logistics inefficiencies have far-reaching implications for every sector of the supply chain and, ultimately, for the nation’s economic growth.

“While we appreciate the dedication shown by the President and the Ministry of Highways, Ports & Aviation, we reiterate the need for an all-hands-on-deck approach. By harnessing the power of digitalization, process improvements, and technology, we can enhance operational efficiency and restore Sri Lanka’s standing in the global trading community,” the statement concluded.
