Sri Lanka will host the inaugural YoungShip Global Leadership Summit this November 2024
Sri Lanka is set to host the inaugural YoungShip Global Leadership Summit (YGLS) from November 16 to 19, with events taking place in Colombo and Galle. The summit aims to foster the next generation of maritime leaders through engaging discussions, hands-on workshops, and extensive training sessions.
The event has garnered significant support from key industry players, including Meridian Maritime Services as the Platinum sponsor, with Advantis Ltd. and McLarens Group as co-sponsors. Additional partners, such as PIL and Helanka Vacations by MendisOne, along with 12 other organizations, will also contribute. The Sri Lanka Association of Shipping Agents and WISTA Sri Lanka are vital partner associations, while SAGT Port of Colombo will be the lanyard sponsor.
Keshia Janssens, President of YoungShip International, emphasized the summit’s objective: “The YGLS is designed to bring our chapter leaders from around the world together to inspire, learn, and grow both as an organization and as individuals.”
YoungShip Sri Lanka Chairperson Maleena Awn highlighted the importance of hosting this event: “This summit is a landmark for Sri Lanka, offering a platform to showcase our cultural heritage while fostering international collaboration.”
Sri Lanka was chosen to host the first YGLS due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean and its rich maritime history. YoungShip Sri Lanka, a dynamic and active chapter, was awarded this opportunity, aligning with their mission to create a hub for knowledge sharing, innovation, and collaboration. The YGLS 2024 will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and networking sessions, with a strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and global cooperation in the maritime industry. Attendees from over 25 countries will explore Sri Lanka’s cultural and natural landscapes while engaging in dialogues that will influence the future of maritime leadership.
The summit’s theme, “Mystical Art and Craft,” celebrates Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural traditions, including its renowned 18th-century devil masks and Kolam dance. This focus on heritage will enrich the international conversation on sustainable practices within the maritime sector.
According to the UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2023, the global maritime industry has experienced a 3.5% annual growth, underscoring the need for innovative leadership to sustain this momentum. With maritime shipping accounting for nearly 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, the summit’s focus on sustainability is both relevant and necessary. Discussions will explore pioneering technologies, such as green fuels and energy-efficient vessels.
Majid Awn, Managing Director of Meridian Maritime Services Ltd., commented: “This summit is a crucial initiative for learning, networking, and growth among the next generation of maritime leaders.” Ruwan Waidyaratne, Managing Director of Hayleys Advantis Ltd., added: “Engaging young professionals in this vital sector ensures the future of shipping is in skilled and knowledgeable hands.”
Shehara De Silva, Group Managing Director of McLarens Holdings Ltd., emphasized the summit’s goals: “Empowering young leaders, promoting innovation, and advancing sustainability are essential for the progress of our industry.”
The summit will feature speakers from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, offering a broad range of perspectives on global maritime challenges and opportunities. This diverse representation highlights the event’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and shared learning.
