Sri Lanka’s China-funded port, experiences a 40% quarterly increase in RORO operations

Sri Lanka's China-backed Hambantota International Port (HIP) reported a 40% rise in roll-on-roll-off (RORO) vehicle transshipments in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the second quarter. The number of vehicles handled increased from 125,526 units in Q2 to 175,583 units in Q3.

“We’ve seen a significant uptick in the arrival of high and heavy vehicles from contracted clients, which has played a major role in boosting the port’s revenue,” a spokesperson said.

The port attributed the growth to several RORO shipping lines launching new services and destinations through HIP, reflecting their increasing confidence in the port, especially with the transshipment of high-end vehicles.

New shipping lines and ports, including Shanghai, Ulsan, Taicang, Pyeongtaek, Dafeng, and Baltimore, contributed to the rise in volume. HIP had already expanded its yard space in anticipation of this growth.
