The Port of Riga introduces a digital system for streamlined freight access

Port of Riga Launches Comprehensive Digital Access System

Starting November 1, the Port of Riga will implement a cutting-edge digital access and pass system, transitioning visitors and freight vehicles to a fully electronic entry process. Appointments will now be booked online, and all document submissions and verifications will shift from paper to digital platforms.

"When I assumed leadership at the Port Authority, one of my key objectives was the digitisation of port processes," said Ansis Zeltiņš, CEO of the Freeport of Riga. "We’ve collaborated closely with stevedoring companies, conducted pilot projects, and drawn inspiration from international best practices to enhance efficiency."

The electronic access system marks the first step towards comprehensive digitisation of the port’s cargo operations. Zeltiņš emphasized plans for future traffic regulation solutions to minimize congestion, streamline freight transport, and improve urban mobility—reducing the environmental impact on surrounding communities.

**Advancing Digital Efficiency**
The Port of Riga has actively digitised its security and access processes, aiming for a seamless electronic document flow. Its existing digital systems support a range of functionalities, including visitor application processing, biometric face recognition, car plate analysis, and real-time data integration.

Previously, the system was limited to port employees and visitors. Now, freight traffic will also be integrated, requiring port merchants to submit supporting documents digitally. This removes the need for physical paperwork at checkpoints and synchronizes data with terminal management systems. Terminals already equipped with these solutions have reported smoother operations for drivers, carriers, and security personnel.

**Benefits of Digitisation**
The new system is expected to significantly reduce truck handling times, enhance cargo movement efficiency, and streamline transport flow planning. By minimizing physical interactions, the system also bolsters safety and simplifies record-keeping.

Looking ahead, the Port of Riga is preparing to adopt the electronic consignment note (eCMR), aligning with Latvia’s broader logistics digitisation efforts. The port has integrated with the SRS Customs Administration’s EMDAS system for automated customs status updates and the CSDD system for vehicle verification, including license plate checks and inspection compliance.

**Future Innovation**
In addition to its access system, the Port of Riga is pursuing ambitious digitisation projects. These include equipping access points with biometric and machine vision technologies and collaborating with major ports to develop a multimodal logistics platform. This platform aims to connect port users, cargo carriers, and authorities through a unified digital network, paving the way for a smarter, more integrated logistics ecosystem.

By embracing these advancements, the Port of Riga is solidifying its position as a leader in port innovation and efficiency.
