Wan Hai Lines has placed an order for its largest container vessels to date
Container shipping newbuilding orders continue to surge, with Wan Hai Lines leading the way by placing an order for its largest vessels to date at South Korean shipyards. The Taiwanese carrier has contracted up to eight 16,000 TEU, methanol-ready container ships, with the order divided between HD Hyundai Samho and Samsung Heavy Industries.
The price per vessel ranges from $186 million to $204 million.
In addition, Wan Hai had previously committed to 20 methanol dual-fuel vessels, including twelve firm orders and four optional 8,000 TEU ships with Taiwan's CSBC Corporation, and four 8,700 TEU dual-fuel vessels with HD Hyundai Samho, as part of its fleet optimization strategy.
Currently, Wan Hai operates a fleet of 123 vessels totaling 530,000 TEU and is set to add eight newbuilds to its fleet over the next two years.
In a related development, Taiwanese carrier T.S. Lines recently completed a successful IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, raising capital to finance its own newbuilding program.
